I'm of a generation that forget to use my phone, so while I live abroad, currently in Cambodia, it's taken me time to remember I have Google Translate at my disposal. Often though, someone else will use it first or it's a last resort. But yes, I'm all for using the 'ol noggin. Use it or lose it!
If I am having a truly difficult time, I am all for using what’s at my disposal. The brain is just my preferred go to when given the option. There are certainly places I know that I’d have to plan 3-4 years in advance if I wanted to try and get by without a phone haha. Interesting others will pull it out to translate before you!
Hey Preston, this is a really great piece! I really love how you talk about the importance and benefits of learning a new language. I learned French throughout high school and college and I also took on Japanese. I've been off and on when it comes to Duolingo, but I plan on being more consistent to get my Japanese back up. My sister also knows multiple languages. Thank you for posting this :)
Thank you! I learned Spanish pretty early and the area I live in has a very big Hispanic population, so it makes sense for me to get on learning it haha. Where I live also has a massive Korean population, so I also feel like it would be useful.
I don’t know why French just hates me. It’s literally the only language that feels weird when I try to speak or sing in it. But, there are some French songs I love to sing.
I really look forward to take on Japanese soon! Well, a couple years. If I don’t have a firm grasp of Korean first, I feel like I’ll be setting myself up for failure haha.
You're very welcome Preston! And ya, I'd say French really just depends on how much French you hear. My teachers would only speak to us in French and play songs from a lot of different French artists so that helped me out a lot.
I'd say Japanese is the toughest one I ever had to learn because of fluency and the intonations of their voice. I learned it better overtime, right now I'm just trying to make sure I don't lose it because I did like writing in Japanese--even though some of the symbols are beyond hard still lol.
Oh, me writing in Hangul is so bad, my regular handwriting is awful enough as it is haha. Immersion is definitely the way to go when trying to get into a language the best. For me Spanish is just vocabulary and repetition, I just need to jump into the fray and put myself in more spanish speaking situations. Honestly, same with Korean, but that’s a lot scarier.
