The Health Chronicles: Learning From Unhealthy Benders
Plus, New Phone Means New Problems!
Happy Sunday, and welcome to another installment of The Health Chronicles. Today I want to talk about what happened when I did a hardcore unhealthy food binge this week, and how I will try to manage the blessing of having a new and capable phone, while also acknowledging the problems it will present.
Wednesday I got out of work later than I thought I would. I am learning about when we are expected to be finished with closing duties, and that when our office says it's closed on our website does not actually reflect the real closing time for us. I don’t really mind because compared to my last position I am still getting out plenty early, but there’s certain ways that I think we can be more efficient with getting out on time. But this post is not about me complaining about my new position, because I genuinely do love it.
However, I did falter on Wednesday when it comes to food because I did not prepare myself in terms of what my cravings may look like coming out of work. So, I had a ton of sugar when I got home. I also had 2 7-11 slices of pizza. I also had a couple sodas.
Needless to say, not exactly in line with what I have been planning for 2024.
Something blew me away though. I woke up in the middle of the night a couple of times that night, and reached over and chugged the rest of my soda. It was 20 oz and I drank it basically when I was half asleep and then turned over to go back to sleep. It was almost unconscious. I barely remembered it and in the morning I was only able to confirm that I did not dream of doing so.
Also, when I woke up, I felt like I was hungover. I did not drink, and have not drank in a while. But I know the feeling of being hungover all too well, for better or worse. That same brain fog, kind of “off” feeling, nausea…I had it maybe not because of the pizza (though I am sure it did not help), but because of the insane amount of sugar I had in my body. Thankfully with good tea and moving in the morning, the feeling subsided quickly. But, I was shocked at how badly that level of consumption affected me.
I am convinced more and more every day that sugar is something we really need to treat more like poison. It’s an accepted addiction and we need to actively fight against it.
New Phone, New Problems!
Speaking of accepted addictions, I got a new phone this weekend! To be honest, I really needed one. My old phone was serviceable, but a nuisance to do almost anything on, to the point where I would have to restart it every single time I left Wi-Fi because it would not join the wireless carrier’s internet network automatically. It was annoying, but that annoyance kept me off of my phone.
With a new phone, I am presented with the new challenge of trying to maintain a healthy relationship with that screen. I have allowed myself a grace period, as I have been setting up my phone trying to get it to have the correct settings. As you all know, I am big on minimizing notifications and making sure I get only information from my screen that I want. But I have also been on the new phone this weekend more than I would have liked. I probably will be today as well. But like I said, I am allowing myself a little grace.
But! With this new phone, I can also do a much better job of keeping track of health data moving forward. As a result, I’ll be able to show you all more screenshots like I was in previous iterations of this article. It will help keep me honest about what I am doing and the progress (or lack thereof) I am potentially making. So, expect the format of these installments to become more uniform moving forward. I am nervous, but I am also incredibly happy that things are slowly but surely being put back together in my life.
I look forward to sharing my progress with you all as I move through this new year. Please feel free to tell me what you are doing to make healthy decisions in your life! I hope you all have a wonderful week.
