Hello all! Welcome to another edition of The Health Chronicles. Today, I’d like to highlight what a difference walking makes in my mood.
So, for my job, I walk to and from work. Sometimes it’s not the entire way, and sometimes it’s broken up into chunks. But all in all, my commute is probably 5.5 ish miles of walking total. When you combine that with the fact that my job also has me doing a lot of walking as well, it can be easy to get to 8-9 miles in a day.
Well, this past week, I worked 3 days straight and averaged 10 miles per day.
Was I sore after every day? Absolutely. Though, I think that has more to do with walking on asphalt and concrete and not having the best boots for walking. I am changing one of those things this week. But the soreness wasn’t what I took the most from these long walks.
I realized that, once again, I am always in a better mood when I walk a lot. I get lost in podcasts and music, and when I’m wearing better walking shoes, I barely notice my soreness. There’s also countless health benefits to doing walks that aren’t nearly as strenuous as mine, but for me the mental and brain health that comes with it is second to none.
So, 30 miles in 3 days may have been somewhat physically daunting, but my brain (and blood vessels) absolutely loved it.
The sun also decided to make its return this week! Here where I live in the DC area, it has been overcast and rainy for the last couple of weeks. I don’t consider myself someone whose mood is affected too much by the weather. However, 2 plus weeks of little to no sunlight can get to even the most joyous of people. So, it was very nice of the sun to come back midweek and let us know it’s still there! The bees were also quite thankful as well.
Following up on last week, my mood has significantly improved, even if I am still working on what needs to be done in order to move forward in life in a positive way. Thank you to those who reached out to check on me. When there’s a major development in a positive way, I’ll be sure to update you all.
Now, some measurements.
Did you drink last week? No.
Did I have junk food? Yes, but I am prep cooking today!
Average Walking Distance: 6.1 Miles. I think this average can actually go up. I was pretty inactive in terms of walking over the weekends.
Sleep Time Average: 6 Hours, 47 Minutes. College football kept me up last night…oops lol.
Screen Time Average: 7 Hours, 15 Minutes. Saturday and Sunday are easily the worst. Looking for more alternatives!
Average Notifications: 488. I am tweaking how many notifications I get even from sports apps. That said, since the majority of these come during the weekend as score updates, this isn’t so bad.
Average pickups: 132. I want to start tracking this more because I think the less we feel the need to do this with our phones, the better, for obvious reasons. Yesterday I sent Twitter into the lead…Before, it was Substack (yay!) and Spotify.
So, the goals for this week are pretty simple. Continue to move more. Eat healthier. Make the progressions in life that will help keep me in a happier place moving forward. It’s a much better outlook than where I was last week, and I actually do think the sun being out helps more than I may realize.
Have a great week!
