As many of you know, I am not the biggest fan of social media. The way they push negative information into our feeds and their business model of addiction and data collection are things that do not sit well with me.
HOWEVER, a broken clock can be right twice a day, and sometimes social media will feed you something useful when you scroll. It may take a lot of blocking and muting, but it can be done. And on those rare occasions, you find some hidden treasure.
That happened to me this morning on Threads. While doing a casual scroll on my “for you” feed, I came across a post that talked about library cards in my area, and who was eligible to get them depending on where you lived. The post stated that Arlington County, an area I wrote about a couple weeks ago, has an agreement with several counties in the area that you can also get library cards in those counties if you live in Arlington! I do not live in Arlington, but I do live in Fairfax County, so I was cautiously optimistic and curious when I read this.
So, I went to one of the libraries in Arlington today and asked if I could get a library card from them as a resident of Fairfax County. I was told and I quote, “Absolutely!”. I presented them with my ID, and the process took 5 minutes.
So, here’s the proof of my new Arlington County library card!
I was also given this awesome bag.
For reference, here are the other jurisdictions Fairfax County residents can get library cards and I am sure there are reciprocal agreements between others as well:
Washington DC
Alexandria
Falls Church
Manassas
Manassas Park
Montgomery County
Prince George’s County
Frederick County
Arlington County
Fauquier County
Loudoun County
Prince William County
Talk about a way to make my day! So, if you’re in the area, take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. And go to libraries often in general! If you’re not in the area, check with the library where you are, especially if it’s a more densely populated place. I am sure this isn’t the only area in the US or the world that has this sort of agreement.
Now, if you’ll excuse me…I have some library cards to collect.
